If it is a beautiful evening, you can drive round to the other side of the Loch, left at Drymen and on to Balmaha until you find a nice looking area to park up and get your chairs out to enjoy the sunset over the mountains of the southern Highlands. The estate has a nine hole golf course (green fees apply) and a marina with an excellent restaurant on the shores.Paths wind through the grounds and Arboretum, around the back of the walled garden where there are tennis courts, a play area and archery. Occupancy of the lodge provides free access to the on-site leisure club with a wide range of facilities including swimming pools, sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, squash courts, fully equipped gym and children’s club. There are concessionary rates for the amazing Carrick Spa with a superb infinity pool over-looking Ben Lomond and the Highlands and an excellent 18 hole golf course, both at the resort's 'sister' site less than 5 miles away. Courtesy transport is available by booking with hotel concierge. Nearby Loch Lomond Shores and village of Balloch are within easy walking distance for shopping etc. Lovely little Farmers market on Sundays. Balloch is the village at the bottom of the Loch on the mouth of the River Leven, lovely area to wander around in the sunshine, cafes and pubs to sit outside. Balloch castle and country park is a little further round the loch, walkable and definitely ride-able, excellent for kite flying. Luss is another beautiful little village right on the shores with the excellent Coach House café/restaurant. There is a small beach area adjacent to the car park if you fancy a dip!! Further afield Helensburgh boasts the beautiful Charles Rennie Macintosh, Hill House, National Trust property and is well worth a visit – approx 20mins away. Arrochar, on the shores of Loch Long is very popular and I can recommend Tom Butcher ceramics at Mansfield Studio. Further west, over the ‘Rest and be Thankful’ you’ll drop down to Loch Fyne and the original Oyster Bar with stunning views down the Loch. Does do some non-seafood dishes as well but also has an excellent delicatessen Beyond this is Inverarry and the bijou but superb Inverarry Castle, location for the Christmas 2013 Downton house party! Alternatively, head north, all the way up the west bank of Loch Lomond, turn left at Crianlarich for Oban – Highland Games usually on during this week (also on for 3 days in Dunoon further south) or right and then left later for Killin and the Falls of Dochart.  If you want to be active there is always Ben Lomond to climb. This is on the other side of the loch so can be accessed by a scenic drive round or take the ferry across to Rowardennan. There are some outstanding places on the eastern side accessed via Aberfoyle where you will also find the Queen Elizabeth Country Park straddling the Highland Boundary Fault. Ride one of the longest zip wires in Europe across the valley which gives you enough time to settle into your harness and enjoy the view before landing at GoApe or take a trip on board the steamship up Loch Katrine. Glasgow is a short distance away by train from Balloch or drive right into the city centre with great shops and central multi-screen cinema. Try the Willow Tea Rooms if you are a fan of Charles Rennie Mcintosh and also visit Kelvingrove Museum for many of his original designs and those of his school. The Burrell Collection in Pollock Park is not to be missed Edinburgh can be reached by an hour’s drive to Hermiston Gate at the end of the M8 and jump on the park and ride – sit upstairs at the front of the bus for the best view of the city – to get right into the centre along Princes Street. Edinburgh Festival is on during August and the Fringe is still going through this week. Buses run half hourly through the night back to Hermiston Gate where the parking is free. OR you may just want to relax in your comfortable lodge absorbing the ambience of your surroundings. Food shopping Arrival hampers can be ordered although I have never done so, so can’t really comment. There is a medium sized Co-op in Balloch and Sainsburys in Dumbarton approx. 8 miles away. Excellent farm shop with local produce about 2 miles towards Tarbet near The Carrick. More information is available at the respective web sites. Cameron House lodges are an excellent base to explore the surrounding countryside and/or culture or just to relax. Electricity not included Pets not allowed
